At what age shall I consider buying a roller shoe to my son?

My first son is 9 and turning 10 in couple of months. He started roller shoes last year only. But my second son - 5 yrs old wants a pair of roller shoes now. Is it safe? What is the right age for him to get one?

At what age shall I consider buying a roller shoe to my son?
I got my son a pair when he was 4. I didn%26#039;t get him Heelies, I got him a pair that had 4 wheels, because it seemed safer. I explained the rules, and he has followed them...no going up or downstairs with the wheels out, do not skate anywhere near the basement steps, common sense stuff. He%26#039;s been fine with them. Sure, he falls down, but so did I when learning to skate. The first pair of skates he ever had was when he was only about 2 and I got him the Fisher Price skates that go ovwer the shoes. Your son will be fine. let him have some fun!!! BTW he%26#039;s 5 now, and we go skating at a local rink regularly, and he is pretty good now.
Reply:I wouldn%26#039;t get it for him until he can roller skate by himself and use the brake. So I would say about 6-7 years old.

Also, you should know that some studies have shown that roller shoes, such as heeley%26#039;s, are prone to cause foot, leg, and back problems in young children who wear them for prolonged periods of time. Have your kids rotate between some tennis shoes and the roller shoes regularly.
Reply:My five year old rolls around great.
Reply:Please dont buy those for your kids. My 3 year old daughter was run down by a kid wearing those shoes in wal-mart. She was holding on to the cart and he literally ran her over. She wasnt hurt, but she could have been. Not saying your kids will be running loose while wearing them, but why risk it? They could hurt the child wearing them, or an innocent bystander. Do you really want to get a huge hospital bill when your kid runs over another kid, or %26quot;accidently%26quot; knocks them down.
Reply:If he has good coordination I think 5 is fine. My boys had them around that age. If he is a little less coordinated then maybe you should wait. I would just explain to him that it takes a few days to master them, and have big brother give some lessons. Maybe even have him slip his brothers on to get the feel before you commit.
Reply:They are only a fad - and an extremely bad one at that.

Doctors, all over the US, are complaining about them. They cause too many injuries to children - they need to be outlawed!
Reply:NEVER.... They%26#039;re extremely dangerous. Doctors are up in arms about them because they%26#039;re so bad. Not only do they cause alot of injuries, but they can cause long term back or ankle problems because of the way kids position their bodies in them. I%26#039;d take your 9-year-olds and throw them away!!! Then I would explain to BOTH boys that they can have seperate skates or roller blades.
